Ries slowly came to with a massive headache and bodyache. Flashes of the fight with the giant Behemoth flitted through her mind. The thing really bashed her good, she remembered. She probably should be concerned about broken bones or such, but because of the nature of her mutation, the pains she felt were buried under the constant blanket of agony she always felt. Having hundreds of weapons sticking out of one's skin was not a pleasant experience. It was worse when she pulled one of the blades out.

She struggled a bit but quickly realized she was bound to a chair with stout, heavy chains. They were tight and very uncomfortable. They also prevented her from moving her arms or legs at all, which meant she couldn't pull a blade free even if she wanted to. So instead of trying to escape, she took the opportunity to look around. The room was dark, dank, and completely filthy. A single light lit the room, but it was dim and didn’t do much to make things visible outside its circle of illumination. The most interesting thing, however, was that she wasn’t alone.

Someone else was bound to a chair six feet away.

“Son of a bitch,” Ries exclaimed, laughing loud enough to rouse the other person. “What the fuck are you doing here?”

The other person stirred when Ries talked. It was a man. His head had been hanging limply forward with his chin resting on his chest. There were several cuts and abrasions to his body. When she could see his face better, she saw one puffy eye and a split lip. Other than that, he seemed fine.

“Oscar Thorne.” Ries smiled. It was a wide, terrifying thing that showed off her blood-stained teeth. “I’m supposed to kill you.”
